National Stadium Karachi: History, Capacity, Records and Everything Cricket Fans Need to Know
National Stadium Karachi is not just a cricket ground in Pakistan with lots of emotions. It is 71 years of Pakistan cricket compressed into 174 acres in the heart of the country’s largest city Karachi. It was officially renamed the National Bank Cricket Arena in late October 2022. It remains the most historically significant venue in Pakistani cricket and the only ground in the world where Pakistan went unbeaten in 34 Tests across nearly five decades.

Whether you are visiting as a cricket fan for a PSL match, following the Champions Trophy 2025 renovations or simply want to know the capacity, records and how to get there, this is the complete guide to National Stadium Karachi.
Why National Stadium Karachi Is Called Pakistan’s Fortress
The word fortress we often hear in cricket commentary all the time. At National Stadium Karachi it actually means something.
From Pakistan’s first Test match at this ground in April 1955 against India, all the way through to December 2000, Pakistan has played 34 Tests at NSK and won 17 of them. More importantly, they lost none. Not one. For 45 years, no visiting team could beat Pakistan here.
As far as talk goes, the England team finally broke that record in 2000-01, winning in difficult conditions. But by then the ground had already cemented its place as one of the most intimidating venues in world cricket for touring sides.
The Karachi crowd is not passive. It is loud, knowledgeable, passionate and relentlessly partisan. Touring teams knew they were walking into something different the moment they arrived.

That history is what separates National Karachi Stadium from every other ground in Pakistan. Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium is beautiful. Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium has become the modern home of Pakistan Test cricket. But NSK has the record that nobody can take away.
How National Cricket Stadium Karachi Was Built
In the early 1950s, Karachi was the capital of Pakistan. The only cricket ground available for big matches was at the Karachi Gymkhana, which had seating capacity so limited it was embarrassing for a national capital.
A plan was drawn up in the late 50s. The Pakistan Public Works Department, through the Commissioner of Karachi, acquired a plot of land measuring 174.5 acres.
Two senior civil engineers led the construction of Karachi Stadium one named Kafiluddin Ahmed from East Pakistan and second Abdul Rasheed Khan from West Pakistan. The stadium was formally inaugurated in April 1955, becoming Karachi’s fifth cricket ground and Pakistan’s 11th first-class venue.
The inaugural first-class match was between Pakistan and India, played from April 20 to 24, 1955. Pakistan won. Of course they did.
That victory set the tone for everything that followed.
Karachi National Stadium Capacity: What You Need to Know
Current capacity: 30,000
The 2024-25 renovation, carried out in preparation for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, increased the ground’s capacity from 28,000 to 30,000. The expansion came alongside the installation of new foldable chairs in several stands and a complete rebuild of the pavilion building, which now contains 24 hospitality boxes.
Before the 2017 renovation, the ground had previously held significantly more fans. Infrastructure changes over the decades, including improved facilities and proper seating, reduced the raw numbers but dramatically improved the experience for those inside.
For PSL matches and major internationals, the 30,000 capacity fills quickly. If you are planning to attend a match at Karachi National Stadium, book early. The Karachi crowd is one of the most passionate in cricket and the ground sells out for anything involving Pakistan.
The Rs 3.5 Billion Renovation: What Changed in 2025
The most significant transformation in National Stadium Karachi’s history happened between 2024 and early 2025, driven entirely by the need to host the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
Here is exactly what changed:
| What Changed | Detail |
|---|---|
| Floodlights | New LED floodlights installed throughout the ground |
| Pavilion Building | Completely new structure with 24 hospitality boxes |
| Seating | New foldable chairs added across multiple stands |
| Capacity | Increased from 28,000 to 30,000 |
| Fan Guardrails | New safety guardrails installed for spectators |
| Total Cost | Approximately PKR 3.5 billion |
| Inauguration | February 11, 2025 |
The inauguration ceremony on February 11, 2025 was attended by Ex Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori, Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah, and PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi. Ali Zafar, Shafqat Amanat Ali, and Sahir Ali Bagga performed live. Entry was free for the public. It was a proper Karachi celebration.
The 2017 renovation had already spent PKR 1.5 billion on dressing rooms, VIP boxes, 800 CCTV cameras, and elevators. The 2024-25 overhaul built on top of that base.
The Nine Years International Cricket Went Silent in Karachi
The Karachi Stadium story does not get told enough, yes the nine years of long period Karachi National Stadium got unluckily silenced.
The last international match before the long silence was held in February 2009, when Sri Lanka toured Pakistan. That series was cut short after the 2009 attack on the Sri Lanka cricket team in Lahore stadium. The attack changed everything about Pakistan cricket. Non-Asian SENA stopped tours in Pakistan. Karachi, with its existing security concerns became one of the hardest venues to revive.
For the nine years no cricket in Stadium Karachi National sat largely unused for international cricket. The ground that had been a classic fortress, a legendary venue, a place where Pakistan never lost a Test for 45 years was dark.
The PSL era enlightened the dark National stadium. PCB ex Chairman Najam Sethi announced in 2017 that the PSL 2018 final would be held at National Stadium KHI. The dressing rooms and VIP boxes were renovated. 800 CCTV cameras were installed. Security forces were deployed throughout the city.
On March 25, 2018, Islamabad United beat Peshawar Zalmi in front of a full house at NSK. The crowd enjoyed the final match. International cricket stars walked back onto that outfield for the first time in nine years. It was not just a cricket match. It was Karachi reclaiming something that had been taken from it.
That moment matters more than any scorecard for Pakistan cricket.
The Naming Rights Deal: What National Bank Cricket Arena Means
In October 2022, the PCB and the National Bank of Pakistan signed a five-year naming rights agreement. National Stadium Karachi became the National Bank Cricket Arena, officially abbreviated as NBCA.
This was the first naming rights deal for a cricket stadium in Pakistan. The agreement allows NBP to use the venue’s signage and branding outside the playing area. Inside, during international matches under ICC jurisdiction, the ground is still referred to as National Stadium in official documentation.
For Pakistani cricket fans the name change has not really landed. Everyone still calls it National Stadium. Or just NSK. That is unlikely to change regardless of what the sponsorship deal says. But the commercial significance is real. Stadium naming rights at this scale signal that Pakistani cricket venues are becoming viable commercial properties, not just government assets.

Five Moments That Defined National Stadium in Karachi
1. Sachin Tendulkar and Waqar Younis: November 1989
Two of the greatest cricketers ever made their Test debuts at the same ground in November 1989. Sachin Tendulkar at 16 years old walked out for India at National Karachi Stadium. Waqar Younis young steamed in for Pakistan.
Nobody in that ground knew they were watching two future legends in their first Tests. That is what NSK does. It has a way of being present for history.
2. Viv Richards, 181 not out: October 1987
The 1987 World Cup match between West Indies and Sri Lanka at NSK produced the highest individual score in ODI history at the time. Richards was full confident, elegant, and completely in control. 181 not out off 125 balls in an era when that kind of batting simply did not happen. That innings still stands as the highest individual score ever made at this ground in any format.
3. Gordon Greenidge’s Last-Ball Drive: November 1980
Pakistan’s first ODI at National Stadium came against West Indies in 1980 and went to the final ball. West Indies needed three runs off the last delivery. Gordon Greenidge drove Imran Khan through the covers to the boundary. West Indies won. The crowd fell silent. It remains one of the most dramatic finishes in NSK history.
4. Kamran Akmal’s Comeback Century: 2006
Pakistan had collapsed to 39 for 6 against India on a difficult pitch at NSK. The match looked gone. Kamran Akmal walked in and produced one of the great counter-attacking innings in Pakistan cricket history scoring a century that dragged Pakistan back into the game and eventually to victory. It is the kind of innings Karachi crowds still talk about.
5. Babar and Rizwan 203 Not Out: September 2022
The modern era record at NSK came in the T20I series against England. Babar Azam scored 110 not out. Mohammad Rizwan batted alongside him throughout. Their unbroken partnership of 203 is the highest ever T20I partnership at this ground and one of the highest in the format’s history. England’s bowlers had no answer. The Karachi crowd had everything it needed.
National Stadium Karachi in PSL: Home of Karachi Kings
The Karachi Stadium is the home ground of Karachi Kings in the Pakistan Super League. The Kings have played all their home fixtures at NSK since PSL’s return to Karachi following the 2018 final.
The PSL crowd at NSK is a different experience from international cricket. It is younger louder at specific moments and absolutely unforgiving of poor performances by the home side. Karachi Kings have had difficult PSL seasons and the NSK crowd has made its feelings clear on multiple occasions.
For fans visiting Karachi for a PSL match, NSK under the new LED floodlights at night is one of the best cricket viewing experiences in Pakistan.
The new hospitality boxes and improved seating make the 2025-onwards version of the ground significantly more comfortable than what existed before.
