Gull Feroza: The Performance That Should Have Come Sooner

She reached fifty off 41 balls. She finished unbeaten on 63 from 52, hitting nine boundaries in an innings that never lost composure even as wickets fell around her in the final five overs.

Between overs ten and fourteen Pakistan scored 36 runs. That was their best batting phase of the entire tournament. Feroza drove it.

She played every match of the tournament. Her scores were 1 in the first game, 23 against South Africa, 23 against Bangladesh and 1 against Australia before this 63. The question is not whether she has the ability.

This innings confirmed she does. The question is why this version of Gull Feroza appeared only in the final game when elimination was already confirmed.

The Review That Changed the Match

Netherlands needed 127. Heather Siegers was taking them there. She reached 24 off 16 balls. The side were 31 for 0 after 20 balls. The asking rate was under control.

Diana Baig had been hit for two boundaries off her first two deliveries of the match. She came back sharply. Siegers missed a sweep and the ball struck her high on the pad. The umpire turned down Pakistan’s appeal. Fatima Sana reviewed with seconds to spare. Hawk-Eye showed three reds.

Siegers was gone. Netherlands never recovered.

The last seven wickets fell for 13 runs. Babette de Leede held one end for 30 off 41 balls but ran out of partners. Nashra Sandhu bowled three overs for eight runs through the middle and strangled the scoring rate.

Ayesha Zafar took three wickets with her off-spin at 4.33 an over. Fatima Sana came back in the final over and bowled the last three batters with consecutive deliveries to finish with 3 for 12.

Eyman Fatima’s Direct Hit

The run out that removed Phebe Molkenboer in the fifth over came from a direct hit by Eyman Fatima from the inner ring. It was clean and sharp. Eyman played this match after sitting out all four previous games. She scored 0 with the bat but her contribution in the field was visible.

One win. Four losses. Pakistan finished fifth in Group A above only Netherlands. They failed to pass 130 in four of five matches.

The win against Netherlands came with the correct combination: Feroza given licence to bat through, Ayesha Zafar used as a genuine bowling option, and Eyman Fatima given a chance in the XI. None of those decisions were made consistently across the tournament.
