The pitch length in footsteps depends on stride length. An average adult walking pace covers roughly 2.5 feet per step so 66 feet which equals approximately 26 normal walking steps from wicket to wicket.
Cricket Pitch Markings and Measurements
The pitch contains several marked with white lines, each with a specific purpose under the Laws of Cricket:
- Bowling Crease This is the line where the stumps are placed on the pitch from both sides. It marks the bowler’s point of delivery. It is 8 feet 8 inches (2.64 meters) long and runs straight through the base of the stumps. From here, every blowing delivery begins.
- Popping Crease A few steps ahead lies the batter’s line. The popping crease is 4 feet (1.22 meters) in front of the bowling crease. It marks the space where the batter stands and judges every ball. It stretches wide on both sides to define safety and control.
- Return Crease These lines stand at right angles to the bowling crease. They act like silent boundaries for bowlers. Each return crease is at least 8 feet long. One wrong step here can change everything.
- Wide Lines Wide lines define the edge of legal bowling. In Test and ODI cricket, it sits about 1 foot outside the off stump. In T20 cricket, the margin becomes even tighter. Precision matters here.
- Wicket to Wicket The stumps stand 28 inches (71.1 cm) tall and are 9 inches (22.86 cm) wide across three stumps.
Non-Turf Pitch Dimensions
When an artificial surface is used, the ICC and MCC laws specify minimum dimensions:
- Length: minimum 58 feet (17.68 meters)
- Width: minimum 6 feet (1.83 meters)
