WTC 2025–27: What Is at Stake
This series carries more than just bragging rights. It could prove crucial in the current World Test Championship cycle.
Pakistan’s recent Test record has been mixed. After finishing bottom of the 2023–25 WTC standings, they entered the new cycle needing a strong response.
A promising home series win over South Africa in October 2025 was followed by a 0-2 defeat to Bangladesh, while an eight-point penalty for a slow over rate further hurt their campaign.
As things stand, Pakistan are in the lower half of the WTC 2025–27 table. A pair of victories in Trinidad would provide a much-needed boost ahead of their tour of England in August and September 2026 and strengthen their hopes of pushing for a top-six finish, which is essential for any realistic chance of reaching the June 2027 final at Lord’s.
West Indies are also looking to improve their position. They sit in the bottom half of the standings and will see this home series as an opportunity to pick up valuable points against familiar opposition in familiar conditions.
Pakistan Team: Management, Captaincy & Coaching Setup
- Test Captain: Shan Masood
- ODI Captain: Shaheen Afridi
- T20I Captain: Salman Agha
- Test Head Coach: Sarfaraz Ahemad
- White-Ball Coach: Mike Hesson
- Fielding Coach: Shane McDermott
Shan Masood & Sarafaraz Ahemad potions may sacked from their potions. The Test final test squad might be changed from PCB. The sources tells Shan captaincy is in danger and Younis Khan named for batting coach to replace Sarfaraz.
The left-handed opener carries the dual burden of captaining and anchoring a batting lineup that has struggled for consistency on away soil.
The coaching team under Azhar Mahmood will be tested by Trinidad’s unique pace-and-seam conditions, which are quite different from the spin-friendly tracks Pakistan prefer at home.
The official Test squad for this tour had not been formally announced at time of publication. Check back for updates closer to the tour.
West Indies Pace Attack: The Real Threat
The most important subplot in this series involves the West Indian pace battery. Cricket West Indies has been carefully managing the workloads of its three frontline fast bowlers throughout 2026:
Shamar Joseph — The 27-year-old from Guyana is arguably the most exciting fast bowler in Caribbean cricket right now. He has 51 Test wickets at an average of 21.67 and was back in action against Australia in June 2025, picking up early wickets at Kensington Oval in Bridgetown. Joseph is expected to be fit and central to West Indies’ plans for this series after a managed return to regional cricket in early 2026.
Jayden Seales — A disciplined right-arm seamer who was carefully reintegrated into the West Indies Championship programme from April 2026. His accuracy on surfaces with any seam movement makes him a real threat to Pakistan’s top order.
Alzarri Joseph — The third member of CWI’s carefully managed pace trio. His status for the Test series will depend on his fitness progress monitored through the PSL and subsequent camp preparations.
If Shamar Joseph and both Josephs are fit and firing together in Trinidad, Pakistan’s batters face a serious examination. The Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Tarouba has produced surfaces with variable bounce, and West Indian pacers on home soil are always dangerous.
Venue Profile: Brian Lara Cricket Academy, Tarouba
The Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Tarouba has become one of the Caribbean’s most prominent cricketing venues. It hosted its first men’s T20I in July 2022 (West Indies vs India), its first men’s ODI in August 2023, and a T20 World Cup semi-final in 2024 when South Africa defeated Afghanistan by nine wickets. The venue also regularly hosts the Caribbean Premier League final.
For Tests, surfaces at Tarouba tend to offer something to both pace bowlers early and spinners as the match progresses — a combination that suits West Indies’ variety attack and could prove tricky for Pakistan’s often spin-heavy bowling arsenal.
Key Battles to Watch
Shan Masood vs Shamar Joseph Pakistan’s Test captain and opener will have to navigate Joseph’s pace and swing early in each innings. Joseph’s ability to extract sharp movement in Caribbean conditions is the biggest danger Pakistan face.
Babar Azam’s away form Pakistan’s premier batter has often been found wanting in away Tests, particularly against disciplined pace. A sustained performance in Trinidad would go a long way toward silencing questions about his red-ball consistency outside Asia.
Noman Ali / Sajid Khan vs Caribbean batters Pakistan’s spin twins have been devastating at home. Whether they can be as effective on Trinidad pitches — which may not break up as quickly as Multan or Rawalpindi — is the key tactical question for Azhar Mahmood.
Pakistan’s over-rate discipline Pakistan were docked eight WTC points for slow over-rate in 2025. Any repetition in Trinidad would be costly both financially and in the WTC points table.
Pakistan’s ICC Record & History
First international match: 1952
Cricket Board: Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB)
ICC titles: 3 (1992 Cricket World Cup, 2009 ICC World Twenty20, 2017 ICC Champions Trophy)
Pakistan have never won a Test series in the West Indies in recent memory. This tour offers a genuine opportunity to change that record, though the conditions and a resurgent West Indian pace attack make it far from straightforward.
Broadcast & Streaming
Official broadcast details for the Pakistan market had not been confirmed at time of writing. Matches are expected to be available via PTV Sports and/or Geo Super in Pakistan. International streaming via ESPN+ (for Caribbean coverage) is likely. Check your local listings closer to the first Test.
Who Wins the Series?
On paper, this should be a competitive 1–1 draw or a tight Pakistan win. Pakistan have more batting depth when their top six fires, and their spin attack has proven world-class at home. But West Indies, with a fully fit pace attack and home-ground knowledge in Trinidad, are capable of winning 2–0 if conditions assist seam bowling early.
The WTC points make every session meaningful. If Pakistan want to stay in the hunt for Lord’s 2027, they cannot afford to leave the Caribbean empty-handed.
