Pakistan Asian Games 2026 Squad: Is This the 2028 T20 World Cup Blueprint?
The squad list dropped on June 10. Big names not included in Pakistan’s T20 squad for the 2026 Asian Games.
Babar Azam, Shadab Khan, Shaheen Afridi, Haris Rauf, Muhammad Nawaz, Khawaja Nafay, Usman Tariq, Naseem Shah, Fakhar Zaman & Faheem Ashraf.

If you have followed Khelo Pakistan cricket for any length of time, that list of absences hits differently. These are not fringe players being rested. These are Pakistan’s biggest names in white-ball cricket over the last five years and they are all dropped from T20 squad together.
The PCB, selectors and coaches trust on young four players who have never worn Pakistan’s T20I shirt in Pakistan Asian Games 2026 Squad.
This is either a selection disaster or a deliberate long-term plan. Having looked at every piece of evidence available, it is the second one. And if it works, it might be the most important squad announcement Pakistan cricket has made in years.

Why Babar Azam is not in the Asian Games 2026 squad
Here is the honest answer, not the diplomatic one.
Babar Azam has not played a T20I for Pakistan since December 2024. He was left out of T20I squads for the home Bangladesh series, the West Indies away series, and the Asia Cup 2025.
Babar Azam’s 2026 T20 World Cup campaign wrapped up with only 91 runs in 4 innings with collective strike rate of 112.34. His best 32-ball 46 against the USA, and lowest 4 runs against main match vs India. his scoring gears were tightly checked during a high-pressure struggle against India’s bowling unit.
When asked about a subsequent absence from an ODI squad, head coach Mike Hesson gave the standard line: Babar was not dropped, the changes were made to give opportunities to emerging players. That is the official position.
Meanwhile in the 2026 PSL for Peshawar Zalmi, he scored 588 runs in ten innings at a strike rate of 146.61. These are exactly the kind of numbers that place immense pressure on selectors regarding his role and impact in the shortest format. Check his full stats.
Why Shaheen Shah Afridi is not in the Asian Games 2026 squad
Shaheen’s absence is slightly different and arguably more surprising for Pakistan cricket fans.
He was part of the T20 World Cup 2026 squad and finished as Pakistan’s second-highest wicket-taker with eight wickets. He also retained the ODI captaincy after Rizwan was sacked in October 2025.
So why is Pakistan’s ODI captain not in the Asian Games T20 squad?
The most likely explanation is workload management and format separation. Shaheen is being positioned as Pakistan’s long-term ODI leader ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup.
Running him through a T20 tournament in Japan three weeks before Pakistan’s international calendar resumes carries injury risk with limited upside. The Asian Games, while an official T20I event, does not carry the same weight as an ICC tournament for a player in Shaheen’s position.
There is also the selection philosophy at play. If this squad is genuinely about testing the next generation, Shaheen’s presence would change the dynamic entirely. He would dominate the pace attack and crowd out the bowlers the selectors are actually trying to evaluate.
Why Pakistan T20 Captain Salman Ali Agha is Out
Salman Ali Agha is Pakistan’s current T20I captain. His absence from the Asian Games squad is the most eyebrow-raising decision in this announcement.
The explanation is uncomfortable but probably accurate. Pakistan did not reach the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup 2026 under Salman’s captaincy. They also lost match to India. Giving the Asian Games captaincy to Farhan instead sends a message without saying it publicly: Farhan is being considered for T20I leadership going forward.
Sahibzada Farhan: why he deserves this captaincy
The numbers justify the captaincy completely. Farhan finished the T20 World Cup 2026 as the tournament’s leading run-scorer with 383 runs from seven matches, averaging 76.60 at a strike rate of 160.25.
He became only the second player in T20 World Cup history to score two centuries in a single edition and joined Chris Gayle in record board. He broke Virat Kohli’s 12-year-old record of 319 runs set in 2014. He was named in the ICC Team of the Tournament despite Pakistan not reaching the semi-finals.
In all T20 cricket, Farhan has nine hundreds, the joint fifth-most of all time. At 30, he is the most senior player in this squad. He has the credibility to lead and the profile to set the tone.
Pakistan were knocked out and Farhan ended up on the winning side of history anyway. There is something very Pakistan cricket about that sentence, and it is both a compliment and a source of frustration.
The four uncapped players: who are they and can they make it?
- Akif Javed (25, Left-arm Fast) – 6’1″ quick with nasty bounce. Has 2 ODI caps & franchise miles; treating the Asian Games as his big T20I audition. 2028 Outlook: Possible.
- Ali Raza (18, Right-arm Medium-Fast) – The squad’s youngest wildcard. A Zalmi & U19 prospect picked early just to soak up the international environment. 2028 Outlook: Too early to say.
- Maaz Sadaqat (21, Batting All-Rounder) – Left-hand batter & handy left-arm spinner. Fresh off a March 2026 ODI debut with proven domestic T20 pedigree. 2028 Outlook: Genuine contender.
- Saad Masood (21, Leg-Spin All-Rounder) – Dynamic spin-bowling all-rounder. Already locked in an ODI debut (March 2026) and boasts PSL experience with two franchises. 2028 Outlook: Genuine contender.
When does Pakistan play at Asian Games 2026?
Cricket begins September 24 at Korogi Athletic Park, Aichi Prefecture, Japan. Medal matches are October 3. The full Asian Games run September 19 to October 4. Pakistan’s specific group fixtures will be confirmed once the draw is announced.
Pakistan Asian Games 2026 Squad: Did PCB Get It Right?
Pakistan cricket has been through a difficult in last 18 months. From T20 World Cup 2024 group stage exit to T20 World Cup 2026 exit before the semi-finals is really hurt Pakistan cricket fans. PCB selectors and coaches replaced two captains in 12 months. Babar and Rizwan both out of white-ball squads. Four players dropping to Category B PCB contracts.
The noise has been loud and most of it has been negative. But underneath the noise, something is actually happening for future. Hesson and the selectors are building with a longer time horizon than the next ICC events.
The NCA White-Ball Camp starting June 15, which 14 of this 15-man squad will attend, is part of that. The Asian Games squad is part of that. Farhan as captain is part of that.
