Young Pakistan batter officially Saim Ayub ruled out of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 due to a persistent ankle injury. Former captain Shahid Afridi confirmed the news, stating that the left-handed batter needs more time for rehabilitation “Saim Ayub won’t play in Champions Trophy 2025“.
Injury Setback for Saim Ayub Ruled Out
Saim sustained the ankle injury during the Cape Town Test against South Africa. Initially ruled out for six weeks, he is currently undergoing treatment in London, where further evaluation is taking place. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) had sent him along with assistant coach Azhar Mahmood to ensure he receives the best medical care.
Afridi shared insights from his conversation with Saim:
“I spoke to Saim last night. He said he needs at least three more weeks before starting rehab. I advised him to take his time because incomplete recovery can lead to long-term setbacks. He is young with a bright future, so full recovery should be the priority.”

PCB officials have expressed their commitment to Saim’s recovery. PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi stated: “Saim Ayub is a key player for Pakistan cricket. We are ensuring he gets the best possible treatment. His progress is being monitored closely, and we are hopeful for a swift recovery.”
Saim’s injury means he will also miss the two-match home Test series against the West Indies and the tri-nation series featuring New Zealand and South Africa.
Champions Trophy Squad Selection Update
The PCB is yet to announce Pakistan’s final squad for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, which is scheduled from February 19 to March 9. Instead of revealing a provisional squad, the board plans to submit the final names directly to the International Cricket Council (ICC) after evaluating all fitness concerns.
Sources indicate that Pakistan’s final squad will be announced by February 11. With Saim Ayub now officially out, selectors must decide on his replacement in the batting lineup.

Despite being in the early phase of his career, the 22-year-old left-hander has made a significant mark. Since his international debut against Afghanistan in March 2023, he has played 44 international matches, impressing with his aggressive yet composed batting.
His ODI stats are particularly remarkable, with three centuries and one half-century in just nine matches. He played a pivotal role in Pakistan’s 3-0 ODI series whitewash of South Africa, scoring two centuries and winning Player of the Series honors.
