PCB Writes to ICC Over T20 World Cup 2026

The PCB writes to ICC over T20 World Cup 2026 just a day before the global body is expected to deliver its verdict on Bangladesh’s participation, adding a fresh political layer to an already tense situation.

The Pakistan Cricket Board has formally written to the International Cricket Council expressing support for Bangladesh’s reluctance to play its matches in India amid regional political uncertainty.

Pakistan Backs Bangladesh Ahead of ICC Verdict

According to ESPNcricinfo, the PCB informed the ICC that it supports the Bangladesh Cricket Board’s stance on not wanting to play T20 World Cup 2026 matches in India. The letter was also copied to other ICC board members.

The timing is notable. The ICC is scheduled to hold a board meeting on Wednesday to discuss Bangladesh’s request for relocating its matches.

However, sources suggest the PCB’s intervention is unlikely to alter the ICC’s position.

Why Bangladesh Wants Matches Shifted

The issue traces back to rising political tensions between India and Bangladesh.

Bangladesh raised security concerns after the BCCI asked Kolkata Knight Riders to release Mustafizur Rahman, a move that escalated fears around player safety. The BCB later wrote to the ICC requesting that their matches be shifted to Sri Lanka.

The ICC explored alternative venues within India and highlighted the logistical challenges of late changes, but Bangladesh has remained firm.

A proposal to swap groups with Ireland was also rejected.

ICC Position Remains Firm

Despite Pakistan’s letter, the ICC has so far maintained its stance.

It has already conveyed to the BCB that:

  • The tournament schedule will not be changed
  • Bangladesh will not be allowed to play its matches in Sri Lanka
  • India will remain the primary host

The ICC’s firmness suggests that the board meeting is more about finalising the decision rather than reopening negotiations.

Why PCB’s Move Matters, Even If It Changes Nothing

As Umair Hussain, Khelo Pakistan cricket expert, explains, Pakistan’s letter is less about influencing the verdict and more about positioning.

“It signals alignment with Bangladesh on player safety narratives, even if the ICC outcome is already decided,” he notes.

The move also highlights Pakistan’s continued involvement in ICC political processes, despite earlier proposals — including hosting Bangladesh’s matches — being rejected.

What Happens Next

  • The ICC Board will meet on Wednesday
  • A final decision on Bangladesh’s participation and venues is expected
  • Any refusal by Bangladesh to comply could open disciplinary or logistical challenges

With the T20 World Cup 2026 fast approaching, the ICC is keen to close the matter without further disruption.
