The International Cricket Council has stepped up internal discussions over possible sanctions on Pakistan following the decision to skip the India vs Pakistan match at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026.
The February 15 fixture, widely regarded as the tournament’s marquee contest, remains at the center of an escalating dispute between global cricket authorities and the Pakistan Cricket Board.
ICC possible sanctions on Pakistan put PCB under pressure
According to sources, ICC leadership has flagged the boycott as a serious breach of tournament obligations, with concerns extending beyond a single match.
The issue has placed PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi in direct talks with ICC officials as the governing body seeks clarity on Pakistan’s position ahead of the tournament.
Officials believe the situation has also drawn attention from the Board of Control for Cricket in India, given the scale and commercial weight of the India vs Pakistan rivalry.
Possible measures being discussed within ICC circles include:
- Disciplinary action linked to non-participation in the February 15 fixture
- Financial penalties tied to broadcast and commercial commitments
- Temporary withholding of ICC revenue distributions to the PCB
- Restrictions on future bilateral series under ICC oversight
- Review of overseas player eligibility for the Pakistan Super League
While no final decision has been announced, senior figures within the ICC, including voices close to its leadership, have stressed that prolonged uncertainty risks damaging the credibility of the global calendar.
The ICC has reiterated that the smooth conduct of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup remains its top priority, with all member boards expected to uphold agreed obligations.
