Shamyl Hussain is one of the most talked-about young cricketers in Pakistan right now. Born on 10 October 2004 in Islamabad, he is a left-handed opening batter who plays with the kind of controlled aggression that makes him dangerous from the very first ball. He started playing with a hard ball at the age of six or seven in the garden at home with his father and uncles, moved through three years of Under-13 cricket with the PCB, three years at Under-16 level and three years in Under-19 cricket before his domestic career took off and his name started appearing in conversations about Pakistan’s future batting lineup.
His father is Syed Talat Hussain, one of Pakistan’s most prominent television journalists, currently hosting Red Line with Talat on Samaa TV. His father also played one List A match for Islamabad in 2001 before a back injury ended that chapter.
The family connection has attracted scrutiny and accusations of nepotism from sections of Pakistani cricket social media, but Shamyl has consistently addressed this head-on. In an interview with Cricket Pakistan he said his father’s profession has no connection with his cricket, adding that everything he has achieved has come from the hard work he has put in since childhood. In the 2024-25 Quaid-e-Azam Trophy he scored 899 runs in nine matches. In the President’s Cup he scored 452 runs in nine outings. Across November and December 2024 he scored six consecutive fifty-plus scores across formats, a streak of consistency that made it very difficult for selectors to keep ignoring him.
Quetta Gladiators backed him for PKR 84 lakh ahead of PSL 2026, having retained him from the Islamabad United squad where he had been developing over the previous seasons. His PSL debut on 27 March 2026 against Karachi Kings at Gaddafi Stadium Lahore was the kind of entrance people talk about for years.
He scored a half-century off just 21 balls, punching Mir Hamza through cover off the second ball he faced, flicking for six four balls later, taking three sixes off Shahid Aziz and hitting three fours and a six off a single Mir Hamza over to bring up his fifty.
