Islamabad, December 16, 2025 — The Pakistan Cricket Board has officially confirmed the PSL 2026 schedule will run from March 26 to May 3, 2026, marking the longest edition yet with 39 playing days and expanding to eight teams for the first time.

PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi made the announcement Monday following confirmation that the IPL vs PSL clash will continue for the second consecutive year, with both premier T20 leagues overlapping their schedules once again.

IPL vs PSL 2026 Schedule Overlap Creates Player Availability Concerns

For the second straight season, cricket’s two biggest T20 leagues will run simultaneously, creating challenges for player availability and viewership competition.

The Indian Premier League 2026 is confirmed to start on March 26 and conclude on May 31, directly overlapping with the PSL’s 39-day window ending May 3.

This marks a significant shift from 2025 when the PSL kicked off 20 days after the IPL had already started on March 22. The 2026 simultaneous start date intensifies the rivalry between the subcontinent’s premier franchise leagues.

“A lot of investors here asked us about the timeline of the PSL. So, I can tell you one thing: that the PSL 11 will start on March 26, and we are planning to hold the final on May 3,” – PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi.

PSL Expansion to Eight Teams After January 8 Franchise Auction

The PSL 2026 will become an eight-team tournament following a crucial franchise auction scheduled for January 8, 2026, in Islamabad.

Two new franchise rights will be auctioned off, representing the league’s first expansion since Multan Sultans joined as the sixth team in 2018.

The PCB has conducted roadshows at Lord’s Cricket Ground in London and New York over recent weeks, targeting potential investors and commercial partners ahead of the landmark auction.

The five original franchise owners—Lahore Qalandars, Karachi Kings, Islamabad United, Peshawar Zalmi, and Quetta Gladiators—recently renewed their ownership agreements for another 10 years, providing stability to the league’s foundation.

Multan Sultans Ownership Crisis Threatens Defending Champions Status

The status of Multan Sultans remains uncertain heading into the expanded 2026 season, with current owner Ali Tareen confirming he will not renew his ownership rights.

Tareen has been locked in a public dispute with the Pakistan Cricket Board throughout 2025, criticizing the league for lacking transparency and long-term ambition.

The franchise, which has been one of the PSL’s most consistent performers since joining in 2018, will require a new ownership group to continue operations.

If no buyer emerges during the January 8 auction process, the PCB may need to find alternative solutions to maintain the team’s participation in the 2026 edition.

“Being part of this team has been one of the greatest honours of my life. Despite the financial losses year on year, I never once thought about walking away,” Tareen added emotionally.

PSL 2026 Longest Edition with 39 Playing Days

The 11th Pakistan Super League season will stretch to 39 playing days, representing a full week longer than previous editions that typically lasted 30-35 days.

The extended calendar accommodates the increased match load from expanding to eight teams, though the complete fixture schedule will only be released after the January franchise auction determines the two new teams.

Fans can expect significantly more matches than ever before, with early estimates suggesting 60-65 total games compared to the usual 34-match format with six teams.

The tournament kicks off 17 days after the T20 World Cup 2026 concludes on March 8, giving players minimal rest before diving into franchise cricket.

Lahore Qalandars Lead as PSL Most Expensive Franchise

Lahore Qalandars enter as defending champions and currently hold the distinction of being the Pakistan Super League’s most valuable franchise.

The three-time PSL champions will pay approximately PKR 980 million (around USD 3.47 million) annually to the PCB in franchise fees, the highest amount in the league.

Qalandars have dominated recent PSL editions, capturing titles in 2022, 2023, and 2025 under aggressive ownership and smart player recruitment strategies.

Their continued success has made them the benchmark for other franchises as the league expands and attempts to compete financially with the IPL’s massive commercial ecosystem.
