Pat Cummins ruled out of T20 World Cup 2026

Australia has suffered a major setback after Pat Cummins was ruled out of the T20 World Cup 2026, forcing selectors to make two late changes to the final squad ahead of the tournament in India and Sri Lanka.

The fast bowler has failed to recover fully from a lingering back injury, ending hopes of a late fitness clearance. Cummins’ absence removes experience and on-field leadership from Australia’s pace attack just days before the global event begins.

Left-arm pacer Ben Dwarshuis has been added to the 15-player squad, offering a different bowling option for subcontinent conditions.

His ability to swing the ball early and rely on cutters later made him a preferred fit on slower surfaces rather than a like-for-like pace replacement.

Australia have also opted to bring back Matthew Renshaw, leaving out Matthew Short as selectors reshaped the batting group. The decision reflects conditions rather than form alone, with stability and flexibility prioritised for the Sri Lanka leg of the tournament.

Chair of selectors Tony Dodemaide said the revised squad balances control and adaptability.

With spin expected to dominate early matches, Australia believe Renshaw’s left-handed presence strengthens the middle order, particularly while Tim David completes his return-to-play program in the opening phase of the competition.

Despite Cummins missing out, Australia still retain an experienced bowling core.

Josh Hazlewood and Nathan Ellis are set to lead the pace attack. At the same time, Cameron Green provides an all-round option alongside a spin unit headed by Adam Zampa and Matthew Kuhnemann.

Mitchell Marsh will captain the side as Australia open their T20 World Cup campaign in Sri Lanka, where early results will quickly test whether this reshaped squad can succeed without their premier fast bowler.
