Pakistan vs India Hockey: The Head-to-Head Record – Field Hockey Rivalry
183 matches since 1956. Four Olympic finals. One World Cup final. Here is every number behind the fiercest rivalry in field hockey, ahead of their next meeting on 19 August.

Pakistan vs India Hockey Rivalry
Pakistan lead Pakistan vs India hockey head-to-head record with 82 wins to India’s 69, across 183 matches played since their first meeting at the 1956 Olympics. The remaining 32 games were drawn. At the Hockey World Cup specifically, the picture flips: India have won three of the five meetings, including the only World Cup final the two sides have ever played, in 1975.
Pakistan and India have met on a hockey pitch more often than almost any two teams have met in any sport, anywhere. What separates this rivalry from most others is that both nations spent decades at the very top of the game before both slid down the world rankings together. Neither side has been able to shake the other off, not in success and not in decline.
They now meet again in Pool D at the 2026 FIH Hockey World Cup on 19 August, their first meeting at the tournament in 16 years.

Pakistan’s lead is built mostly on strength in bilateral Test series and the Champions Trophy, two formats where they were historically dominant. India’s record looks very different once the lens narrows to Olympic finals and the World Cup, the two events that matter most for silverware.
Sohail Abbas of Pakistan is the leading scorer in the entire rivalry, with 54 goals between 1998 and 2012, more than double India’s top scorer, Sandeep Singh, on 20.
The World Cup Record
Pakistan and India have only crossed paths five times at the Hockey World Cup, and the record here belongs to India, not Pakistan. India have won three of those five meetings, Pakistan two, and there has never been a draw between them at the tournament.
| Year | Result | Score | Details |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1973 | India won | 1–0 | Tight, low-scoring group match |
| 1975 | India won | 2–1 | World Cup final, India’s only title |
| 1986 | Pakistan won | 3–2 | Group stage |
| 2010 | India won | 4–1 | Group stage, India’s biggest World Cup win over Pakistan |
India lead 10 goals to 7 across the five meetings.
The 1975 final is the only time Pakistan and India have played each other for the World Cup itself. Every other meeting between them at the tournament has been a group-stage match. That is what made India’s win that day permanent: it remains the only Hockey World Cup title India have ever won.
Pakistan’s four World Cup titles, by contrast, all came in tournaments where they did not have to beat India in the final to lift the trophy. Numbers-wise, Pakistan are still the most decorated team in World Cup history. Head-to-head against India specifically, they are behind.
Beyond the World Cup
The rivalry’s biggest stage was never the World Cup. It was the Olympics, in the years both countries dominated world hockey outright.
| Year | Event | Score |
|---|---|---|
| 1956 |
Olympic Final, Melbourne India’s fifth straight Olympic gold. First-ever meeting between the two nations as independent countries. |
1–0 |
| 1960 |
Olympic Final, Rome Pakistan’s first Olympic gold, ending India’s run at six straight titles. |
1–0 |
| 1964 |
Olympic Final, Tokyo Third straight Olympic final between the two sides. India regained gold. |
1–0 |
Across all Olympic meetings, Pakistan lead 4 wins to India’s 2, with one draw, in seven games total. India still hold the bigger Olympic medal count overall, eight golds to Pakistan’s three, because Olympic hockey involves more than just these two teams.
At the Asian Games, Pakistan have been the dominant side by a wide margin. The two teams have met in eight Asian Games finals, seven of them in succession between 1958 and 1982. Pakistan won six of those eight finals.

Where This Stands Right Now
The most recent chapter has not been kind to Pakistan. Their last meeting, in the FIH Pro League on 26 June 2026, ended 7-1 to India, with seven different Indian players getting on the scoresheet. It was one of the heaviest defeats either side has handed the other in the modern era.
India’s 2022 Asian Games win, 10-2, remains the largest margin of victory either team has recorded against the other across the full 183-match history.
That form line is part of why the 19 August meeting carries extra weight. Pakistan go into their World Cup return having lost their most recent head-to-head heavily, under a new head coach and a new captain, against a side that has scored freely against them all year. History says this fixture rarely goes to script. Recent form says India start as favourites.
Top Scorers in the Rivalry

Why This Meeting Is Different
Pakistan and India have not met at a Hockey World Cup since 2010. Sixteen years is a long gap for a fixture that used to define the tournament. Three things separate 19 August from anything in the table above.
It is Pakistan’s return, not a routine group game. Pakistan missed the 2014 and 2023 World Cups entirely. This is their first World Cup appearance since 2018, and their first World Cup match against India since 2010. There is no recent World Cup form to compare it to.
The format has changed. The 2026 World Cup drops the traditional quarter-final stage. Pool results carry into a crossover phase, so this Pool D meeting has direct weight on both teams’ route through the tournament, not just pride.
Pakistan go in with a new coach and captain. Bob Johan Veldhof was promoted to head coach only weeks before the tournament, and Abu Bakar Mahmood took over the captaincy from Ammad Butt in late July. Neither has led the side into a World Cup fixture against India before.
