Furqan Bhatti Questions PCB Handling of Player Inquiry as Match-Fixing Rumors Spread

Furqan Bhatti has questioned the Pakistan Cricket Board’s handling of its latest disciplinary inquiry, while pushing back against speculation that the reported seizure of players’ mobile phones is linked to match-fixing.

The controversy emerged after the PCB confirmed an internal disciplinary inquiry into matters concerning discipline and conduct during Pakistan’s ongoing England tour. The board has not publicly identified the players involved or confirmed the specific allegations under investigation.

Reports have separately claimed that the mobile phones of two Pakistan players were taken during the tour. However, the PCB has not officially confirmed those reports or disclosed what investigators may have found.

Bhatti, speaking in a video discussion, questioned the growing speculation and criticised the way the matter has been communicated publicly.

Furqan Bhatti Questions Match-Fixing Speculation

Bhatti rejected the suggestion that the reported phone issue should automatically be linked to match-fixing.

He questioned the basis for connecting the players to fixing allegations and used deliberate no-balls and maidens as examples while making the point that there is no established evidence of players being involved in such activity.

His comments come as speculation around the PCB inquiry has grown across social media and cricket platforms.

Importantly, the PCB has not announced a match-fixing investigation or charged any player with match-fixing. Its official statement refers only to an internal inquiry concerning discipline and conduct.

Questions Over PCB’s Communication

Bhatti also questioned the PCB’s handling of the announcement itself.

He criticised PCB media director Amir Mir for communicating details of the disciplinary inquiry through his personal X account rather than through the board’s official media channel.

Bhatti argued that matters involving players could have been dealt with internally instead of becoming a wider media issue.

The criticism comes after Mir confirmed that the PCB had begun an internal disciplinary inquiry and said the matter was being handled under the board’s existing regulations.

The PCB also warned that speculative or unverified claims should not be treated as credible and advised stakeholders to rely on official board communications.

What Is Known About the Players’ Phones?

Reports about the phones have become one of the main talking points surrounding the inquiry.

According to reports, the phones of Imam-ul-Haq and Mohammad Rizwan were taken into possession during the team’s stay in London, with claims that data was subsequently obtained from the devices. The PCB, however, has not confirmed that it took the phones or accessed their data.

That distinction is important.

At present, the phone reports should be treated as reported information rather than an officially confirmed PCB finding.

There has also been no official announcement linking either player to match-fixing, betting or another corruption offence.

Bhatti Criticises PCB for Exposing Players

Bhatti further questioned why the PCB’s disciplinary matters had become a major public issue.

He argued that issues involving player discipline could have been dealt with internally through normal procedures, including fines or other disciplinary measures where appropriate.

His criticism also focused on the wider impact of publicly discussing internal matters, particularly when the available information does not establish that the players committed a serious offence.

The PCB, meanwhile, has said that the inquiry is being conducted according to its regulations and that all concerned individuals will be given due consideration.

What Has the PCB Actually Confirmed?

The PCB’s official position currently remains limited.

Confirmed by the PCB:

  • An internal disciplinary inquiry has been initiated.
  • The inquiry concerns matters relating to discipline and conduct.
  • The process is being conducted under PCB regulations.
  • The board says concerned individuals will be given due consideration.
  • PCB has declined to provide further details at this stage.

Not officially confirmed by the PCB:

  • That the inquiry is a match-fixing investigation.
  • That Imam-ul-Haq or Mohammad Rizwan are formally accused of wrongdoing.
  • That the two players’ phones were seized.
  • What information, if any, was obtained from the phones.
  • That any player has been charged with match-fixing or betting.

The distinction matters because the current discussion has moved beyond what the PCB has actually confirmed.

What Happens Next?

The PCB has not announced the outcome of its internal inquiry and has said it will not comment further at this stage.

For now, Furqan Bhatti’s comments add another layer to the controversy, particularly around the PCB’s communication strategy and the growing speculation surrounding the reported phone investigation.

Until the board releases further information, claims about match-fixing or specific wrongdoing involving Pakistan players remain unverified.
