Saud Shakeel Biography
Saud was born on 5 September 1995 in Karachi, Sindh, and grew up in the Federal B. Area. He came to the attention of cricket circles at the age of twelve when Azam Khan, then associated with Quetta Gladiators management, introduced him to the Pakistan Cricket Club through a family contact. Mentorship from established internationals including Sarfaraz Ahmed and Asad Shafiq shaped the technical foundation his batting is now built on.
He captained Pakistan at the 2014 ICC Under-19 World Cup before working his way through domestic cricket for Karachi, Sindh and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, along with departmental cricket for Pakistan Television and National Bank of Pakistan.
His first-class debut came on 26 October 2015 for Karachi Whites. In the 2017-18 and 2018-19 Quaid-e-Azam Trophy seasons, he was the leading run-scorer for Pakistan Television, accumulating 488 and 414 runs in the respective campaigns. Despite consistent domestic production across those years, his Test debut did not come until December 2022 when he was selected for the series against England in Rawalpindi, at the age of 27.
He made an immediate impression: in his second Test he scored 94 in a fourth-innings chase against England in Multan that Pakistan nearly pulled off, and in his seventh Test match he scored a maiden century against New Zealand in January 2023.
His most celebrated performance came one Test later in Galle against Sri Lanka, where he scored an unbeaten 208, making him the first Pakistani batter to register a Test double century in Sri Lanka. That innings established him as the anchor of Pakistan’s middle order. He averaged above 60 in Tests across 2022 and 2023 combined.
A series-clinching 134 against England on a Rawalpindi pitch where only two other batters reached fifty is another standout contribution from that period. He was named Pakistan Test vice-captain on the back of this red-ball consistency.
At the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup, with Pakistan at 38 for 3 against the Netherlands, Shakeel came to the crease and counter-attacked with 68 off 52 balls, earning the Player of the Match award. He batted seven times in that tournament and made starts in six of those innings.
His ODI temperament has been questioned given the time-intensive nature of his batting, but his red-ball quality is beyond doubt. For Quetta Gladiators in the PSL he scored 323 runs from 10 games in an excellent individual campaign and has since been given the franchise captaincy. His most recent appearances were a Test in Sylhet in May 2026 and a T20 for Karachi Whites in June 2026.
