His considerable lead, and a chance at history, slipping away,Andy Murray dug deep for stamina and mental strength, outlasting Novak Djokovic in a thrilling five-set, nearly five-hour U.S. Open final Monday.

It had been 76 years since a British man won a Grand Slam singles championship and, at least for Murray, it was well worth the wait.

Ending Great Britain's long drought, and snapping his own four-final skid in majors, Murray finally pulled through with everything at stake on a Grand Slam stage, shrugging off defending champion Djokovic's comeback bid to win 7-6 (10), 7-5, 2-6, 3-6, 6-2.

      NEW YORK -- Finally tested, even trailing, at the U.S. Open, Serena Williams turned things around just in time.

Two points from defeat, Williams suddenly regained her composure and her strokes, coming back to win the last four games and beat  6-2, 2-6, 7-5 Victoria Azarenka on Sunday night for her fourth championship at Flushing Meadows and 15th Grand Slam title overall.

With the win Williams became the firt women's tennis player to cross $40 million in earnings. With this U.S. Open singles title and her third round doubles loss, her on-court career earnings are now $40,090,142.

"I honestly can't believe I won. I really was preparing my runner-up speech, because I thought, 'Man, she's playing so great,' " Williams said during the trophy presentation after the 2-hour, 18-minute match, adding: "I'm really shocked."

She might be the only one.

   Serena Williams absolutely crushed Maria Sharapova to win the first ever Olympic gold medal of her career. Serena showed complete dominance as she flew away with the first set 6-0. Similar was the case in the second set in which it was again the american star who was on top. It took about 45 minutes for Sharapova to win her first "game" of the match. At one point during te match when Williams was up 4-1 , it almost seemed like Sharapova would start break down in tears but fortunately that wasn't the case. Serena then celebrated her Gold-medal by performing a crip dance. Maria Sharapova and Victoria Azarenka were also on the podium as the silver-medalist and bronze-medalists respectively.

                       Roger Federer defeated Andy Murray in the final of Wimbledon 2012 to win his 17th Grandslam title overall and his 7th Wimbledon title. By doing so, Federer has now regained the No.1 spot in the World rankings.Roger has also become the second man in the history to become the World No.1 at the age of 30-plus years. Federer will now overtake Pete Sampras in the all-time number of weeks as World No.1. Federer,who was removed from the No.1 position by Rafa Nadal in 2010 , was just a week short of equalling Pete Sampras's record of 286 weeks as the World No.1. 

                        Watched by Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge, the 30-year-old Swiss defeated the fourth-ranked Murray 4-6, 7-5, 6-3, 6-4 on Sunday in the final of The Championships, which lasted three hours and 24 minutes.

 Serena Williams is back, and she looks almost as good as ever.

The 30-year-old American won her fifth Wimbledon title Saturday on Centre Court, beating Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland 6-1, 5-7, 6-2 to claim her 14th major championship.After hitting a backhand winner on match point, she fell onto her back to the grass. She then rose with a grin as big sister Venus - another five-time Wimbledon champion - smiled and applauded, along with the rest of the crowd.

                                                                                    
                      Day-7 action at Wimbledon 2012  again shook the tennis world as an upset saw Women's World No.1 Maria Sharapova crash out in straight sets. Maria tasted defeat at the hands of Sabine Lisicki in straight sets 6-4,6-3.

                                                                 On the men's side ,the first match at centre court was scheduled to take place between the sixteen time major Champion Roger Federer and the veteran Xavier Malisse. In the first set when the score was 4-3 in Federer's favour with Malisse serving, Roger, to the utmost shock of everyone, took a medical time-out because of a back-problem.When play resumed in extreme windy conditions, Malisse managed to break Federer and was serving for the set at 6-5.But he failed to hold on to his serve and eventually ended up losing the  first set on tie-break.Federer completely dominated in the second set and took it away 6-1. Xavier again got going in the third set and captured it 6-4. Malisse continued his form early in the fourth set but then simply lost it and got broken twice to lose the fourth set 6-3 and the match with a score of 7-6(1) 6-1 4-6 6-3.

                         After the shocking departure of Rafa Nadal on day-4 and the mere escape of Roger Federer from a huge upset on day-5 , Day-6  at Wimbledon 2012 was being thought of as one of the cool days without much shocking out-of-nowhere moments.

                                                      The first men's match on Centre Court was scheduled to be played between the former World No.1 and 2009 Wimbledon finalist Andy Roddick and the spirited Spaniard David Ferrer. Even before the match had begun, it was pretty clear that whoever would go on to wn the match wouldn't be doing so in straight sets.After a steady start from both the players in the first set, Roddick took the lead and raced away with the ser  6-2. David came back strongly in the second set and won it on tie-break 7-6(10-8). Ferrer continued to dominate in the third set and bagged it 6-4. In the fourth set, Ferrer maintained his form and didn't give the American any chance to get back in the match. Ferrer took the fourth set 6-3 and closed all doors for Roddick to move through to the next round.
