Imy's Gimme: Junaid Khan ignites Pakistani pace bowling
There is an old English saying that "when one door closes, one opens". Something of that sort has happened to Pakistani cricket in the last 18 months. There was always going to be a void once the two Mohammad's, Asif and Amir, were caught spot-fixing. Finding that sort of quality is hard, if not impossible. Pakistan were blessed with two off the best new ball bowlers in World cricket.

Umar Gul was the obvious choice to the lead from the front. He was the experienced campaigner and a bowler that could change a game on its head single-handedly. Gul did a superb job, from being the back-up seamer he had now been burdened with the tough task of leading the attack for one off the most coveted nations, when it comes to pace. It was hard enough anyhow but bowling without a regular new ball partner adds to the pressure and demand off the job.

Wahab Riaz had emerged in 2010 as a bright prospect. Many had regarded him as the person to become Pakistan's next big thing, though he has disappointed. To be fair, he has only been given limited chances but has not done justice to his ability. One of the problems is that Wahab Riaz strives for too much speed; in looking for that extra yard he loses control of the ball which results in no-balls and wides along with line and length being strayed. The PCB did the best thing possible by removing him from the firing line, before he became another Mohammad Sami.

The one person that has not let Pakistan down is Aizaz Cheema. Though on the wrong side of his career, Cheema has performed whenever called upon. Bowling consistently at a very good pace, he seems to have the knack of picking up wickets and seems unperturbed in pressure situations, as was seen in the Asia Cup final. Though with Pakistan trying to build a team for the future, his place does come into doubt.

Pakistan seem to have a real prospect in Junaid Khan, his performances against Sri Lanka in the UAE, and now in Sri Lanka are a testament to his ability. He has all the ingredients to make to a quality bowler. His problem has been he is somewhat injury prone, which has stifled his career thus far. With the ability to move the ball in the air and off the seam, Junaid bowls a tight line and an nagging length. What really excites the masses about Junaid is that he is able to come around the wicket to a right handed batsman and get reverse swing.

Junaid has picked up 27 wickets in his 8 games thus far. Averaging a superb 26 he has bowled really well considering all of his games are on highways. What Junaid needs now is Pakistan to be cautious with him. Groom him properly and have a bowling coach who can make his raw ability into a World recognisable force.

Pakistani fans, are traditionally obsessed with out and out quick bowlers, but Junaid, like Asif, is on the verge off proving people wrong. Junaid has the chance to make himself a massive name in the folklore of Pakistani bowling, bit for now his just proved that Pakistan's pace factory is still alive and kicking.
