The appointment of Mohammad Hafeez came with some mix reactions. Some were angry, some happy and some ecstatic. Pakistan in T20 cricket has struggled of recently. T20 cricket is a fast placed game where there is little time to recover if major mistakes are made. Misbah was a case in reason.
Misbah came back into the side in 2007 upon the insistence of then skipper Shoaib Malik. He had a fantastic tournament where he excelled and proved many wrong, one bad shot selection in the Final is what is remembered by most though. Since then he has been in and out of the line-up until late 2010 where as Test captain he reached his peak and cemented his place in all three formats.
Hafeez thanked Misbah for his recommendation of him becoming skipper. Hafeez takes over as being one of the senior pro's and a person that has his place in the side unquestioned. His performances since late 2010 are evidence of his re-emergence as a top quality player.
The recall of Mohammad Sami on all three formats is quite bewildering. He has been tested on numerous occasions failing on most. He had a very good Bangladesh Premier League recently; but failed miserably in the Faysal Bank super 8. One wicket in five games is not a performance that deserves a recall.
Faisal Iqbal has performed very well recently but his selection ahead of Fawad Alam and Usman Salhauddin was not warranted. Even Imran Farhat saw himself recalled to the ODI side; simply what has he done to get a recall after being axed from the Asia Cup team?
Though some of the selections have left massive question marks, the inclusions of Afaq Raheem, Ayub Dogar, Rahat Ali, Haris Sohail, Shakeel Ansar and Raza Hasan are a move in the right direction. Players that deserved their recognition based on their performances of late.
Though the massive news was the change of skipper. This allows Pakistan now to groom Hafeez to eventually take over Misbah in all three formats. Azhar Ali should be the other one under such circumstances be treated with upmost care as he has all the credentials to become a future captain. It's high time for Pakistan to forget their favourite players, and their inability of being a captain. It is not about any individual player; but is firmly about Pakistan. At this time, Hafeez is Pakistan's best choice.
