According to a Sunday paper in the United Kingdom, the International Cricket Council has started a investigation into allegations of corruption in cricket around the world. It claimed it has evidence which was passed onto the ICC, who were seeing if it is conclusive enough to convict players.
The Sunday Times investigator, Mazhar Mehmood, alleged to have spoken to a Indian bookmaker who made some startling revelations. There were apparant claims that English County, Bangladesh Premier League and the Indian Premier League were all targets of fixers as they sought to make money out of match fixing.
It was reported that £44,000 was given to batsman to score slowly, £50,000 for bowlers to concede runs and £750,000 for players that can guarantee a match result. There was also a suggestion that players from England, West Indies, New Zealand, India, Bangladesh and Pakistan were rife in the fixing.
The ICC World Cup 2011 Semi-final between India and Pakistan was singled out as the game as a game that was fixed. Later in the day, TV station Zee TV claimed that the 2004 Champions Trophy game between Pakistan V West Indies, a Sri Lanka V India game in 2009 along with Pakistan V Australia 2010 Test at Sydney were all fixed. There is no conclusive evidence on what the Indian based channel was claiming.
These allegations come as three Pakistan players were jailed late last year after a sting by The Times Mazhar Mehmood; who used to work for the News Of The World at the time. Also Mervyn Westfield, a English County bowler was jailed for his part in spot-fixing.
