The 11th edition of the Asia Cup starts on the 11th of March with hosts Bangladesh taking on Pakistan. India and Sri Lanka are the other teams taking part in the tournament that is exclusive to the Sher-E-Bangla stadium in Mirpur.
The first Asia Cup was held back in 1984, and Sri Lanka are the only side to have played all 10 editions thus far. Pakistan and India have played 9 each, both missing one each as a result of strained relations between the two nations. Bangladesh missed the inaugural edition and have also participated in 9 editions. The UAE has hosted 2 Asia Cups, while Sri Lanka 4, Pakistan and India 1 each while this will be Bangladesh's 3rd hosting.
India have won the Asia Cup 5 times, while Sri Lanka have won it 4 times. Pakistan's sole win came in 2000 with a 39 runs win over Sri Lanka in Dhaka. The first edition was a round-robin type while the rest have been points type, with a final. Interestingly, Sri Lanka finished runners up in each of the 10 tournaments; thus meaning a Pakistan, India final has not been experienced.
The last edition was in 2010, where India came victorious; comfortably overcoming Sri Lanka in the final. Overall India have won 22 of the 36 games played; whereas Sri Lanka have a record of 29 victories in 40 games. Pakistan come in with 18 wins in 31 games and Bangladesh have won 2 matches from 29 games. Hong Kong and UAE took part in the 2004 and 2008 editions, both times losing there both games. Bangladesh's two win's have come against the minnows.
Sri Lanka come into the tournament after having a good show in the Australia tri-series. India went out in the group stages and have struggled of late while Pakistan had a poor show against England in the limited overs games. Bangladesh are staging the event on the back of a successful Bangladesh Premier League. The home conditions and a knack of causing upsets means Bangladesh shouldn't be discounted; though winning the tournament will be a steep task.
The climatisation of India and Sri Lanka may cause them problems. One they have been playing on Australian surfaces that are very different from Bangladesh and secondly they will have less than a week to get used to the timing difference. Pakistan on the other hand have played in UAE, which is similar and have players within the squad that played in the BPL, also touring Bangladesh only a few months ago holds them in good stead. The winner can be decided at a toss of the coin as all three teams are equally balanced, though the Dav Whatmore effect can propel Pakistan to win their second Asia Cup.
