Since the resignation of Waqar Younis, Pakistan have been on the lookout for a coach. Mohsin Khan has been in-charge of the national side as a interim coach whilst the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) look at their options. The PCB initially got dozens of applications, which has now toned down to a reported two people.
Former Australian Test batsman, Davenell Whatmore and present interim coach, Mohsin Khan; a man that represented Pakistan as a Test opener. Whatmore, comes with a impressive CV of coaching at the highest level. He masterminded Sri Lanka's 1996 World Cup triumph. This win came at a time when Sri Lanka were regarded, at the time, as nothing more than a minnow of World cricket. Whatmore then went to coach Lancashire in England and won three One-Day competitions. He then went on to coach the Bangladesh side before heading to the IPL and Kolkata Knight Riders. Mohsin on the other hand, apart from having a illustrates Cricket career and these few months of leading the national side; his finest experience is being a leading actor in numerous Bollywood movies.
Looking at the CV's, this is a no brainer. Whatmore is the man to get the job, but this is Pakistan and nothing is as straightforward as that. What does a qualified coach bring to the table? Whatmore would bring discipline of the highest order, perfect diets and emphatic analysis of players fitness. He would study the oppositions weaknesses, field settings would be to plan and more things in that line. That's why Whatmore was my choice the day Waqar called it a day.
Mohsin, on the other hand, has no qualifications and is a relaxed man. Often seen sitting down, drinking a cup of tea, his calm at the worst of times. Mohsin is a very astute speaker and speaks real sense when dealing with the media. Allows the players to flourish, while taking those outside distractions on himself. More importantly, he now has a superb record and full support of his players.
The question is what does a team require? A man who looks at all the details of fitness, nutrition and the technical side or a man that the players look up to and want to play for? Coaching is for players away from the Test arena. If there are any defects in a players game, coaching is needed at domestic and academy levels. When playing at International level, if a player has those players then he doesn't stand a chance.
There is a old English saying that says "Don't try to fix, if it isn't broken"! And thats what I agree with here. Pakistani players have great natural ability but usually fail because of lack of believe and guidance. That guidance has come in the shape of current skipper, Misbah-ul-Haq and Mohsin Khan. The players trust their leaders and believe in their philosophy's. What Pakistan needs at this time is not a coach but a man manager and that person is Mohsin Khan.
