Everyone was hoping for Misbah Ul Haq to continue his attacking batting from Day 1. A handy 20-30 runs were expected from the last 3 wickets of Pakistan’s first innings. Little did we know that all the three wickets would fall for just 1 run and Pakistan would end their innings at a meager total of 257 runs on a pitch completely suitable for batting. Misbah couldn’t reach his deserving century and got trapped by Stuart Broad LBW after adding just a run to his tally of 84 runs. Anderson grabbed the remaining two wickets in the same over by trapping Saeed Ajmal LBW for a duck and Junaid Khan off a healthy nick towards the slip. England had started the day on a high.
The pitch has absolutely nothing in it for the fast bowlers and from the looks of it, there’s not much turn for the spinners as well. It is a ridiculously slow pitch and one has to feel sorry for the bowlers. England’s openers started cautiously and lost their first wicket at the score of 27 when Andrew Strauss got out at 11 runs to an inside edge off Muhammad Hafeez’s clever off-spin bowling; caught by Asad Shafiq at silly point. In came Trott and together with a settled Alastair Cook formed a strengthening partnership of 139 runs. During which, Pakistan lost both of their reviews and both the batsmen had reached their fifties and were looking settled enough to convert them into centuries before Trott’s timber got disturbed by Abdur Rehman who bowled him off a beautiful delivery that struck the top of his off-stump. This caused a stir in the England batting line-up and the next man to go in his nineties was Cook; trapped LBW by a ‘Doosra’ off Ajmal’s bowling. Pietersen also came and went for 14 runs again off Ajmal’s bowling who’s ‘Doosra’ seems to be quite disturbing for the English batting line-up. Bell and Morgan came and continued to have the similar problems facing the Pakistani spin attack.
The contest between Ajmal and Morgan was the one to see as both kept challenging each other. The last over of the day began and the contest intensified. Morgan clearly looked the one under more pressure and succumbed to it on the second last delivery of the day when he nicked a flighted delivery of Ajmal to the slip at Hafeez. Saeed Ajmal has to be praised for his cunning bowling as he bowled the first four deliveries of his last over at a flatter trajectory and then bowling the fifth one with a bit of flight, bamboozling Morgan and hence getting his priceless wicket. The game is now getting in favor of Pakistan again and if they get the rest of English batting order for 50 or 60 runs, they have a brilliant chance of going two up in the series.
Some stats acquired on Day 2:
- Jonathan Trott has never hit a six in Tests.
- Trott and Cook seem to have a better understanding between them as they have six century partnerships and a 50+ partnership together.
- 9 of the 10 Pakistani wickets fell to either LBW or bowled.
- Only once has been an entire team bowled out without a single catch being taken or even a run-out; that was way back in 1948 between Australia and India.
