Misbah-ul-Haq: A KheloPakistan debate

A Missed Opportunity For Pakistan By Tim Holt

If you were to look at Pakistan in all forms of the game, you would come to the conclusion that your are viewing two sides of a two headed coin with the figure head predominating for different reasons..

Misbah Ul Haq, the man who polarises approval or equally disapproval from the fans is of course that main feature for Pakistan.. In the respect, that in the Test arena he has been the man that has not only restored the Teams shattered image, but has the likes of England at the top of the game looking over their shoulder feeling a little worried by the burgeoning potential in the Team. Not since the days of the iconic Imran Khan has Pakistan been such a cohesive unit, and to even be mentioned in a sentence with that immortal figure. Tells the true tale of Misbah's immense calibre.

For all the balance and functionality he fosters for the team in the Test arena, the same cannot be said for him in the shorter forms of the game. He is still the same statesman type leader, but his tactical know how and man management are respected but not as coveted as his play.

In this regard, he is a major cause of the unbalancing of the Team due to the fact that in this modern age success is seen in a Teams middle order being players more renowned for explosiveness than Misbah's resoluteness. Misbah used to have that explosive edge, but in the recent past he has forsaken that for a more traditional batting style.

Duly allowing him to excel in the Test arena, but confound in the shorter forms of the game
It made you wonder when the Pakistani Squads were named for what should be a reasonably comfortable tour for the Team in Bangladesh. Why a more proactive look to the Teams future wasn't adhered too.

In regards to tapping Misbah on the shoulder, and telling him to forget ODI/T20 cricket, and concentrate on the Test arena. Which would benefit the Team in all forms of the game.
From the respect that in the Test arena, it would allow greater longevity for Misbah to continue with the profound effect he is having on the Teams performance, but also to help nurture his successor. More than likely Azhar Ali
Then in the ODI/T20 arena, the Team would have a greater threat with a more suited explosive player in the line up at number 4. As well as giving an excellent cricket mind in Mohammad Harfeez a chance to lead the side in the shorter forms of the game. Even if he proved himself to be a dedicated part of the Team, you could reward Shahid Afridi with the Captaincy in the T20 arena
A situation that would have been a sincere win win for the future prospects of Pakistan in all forms of the game.

Best captain since the great Imran Khan By Imran Asghar I have read alot on Misbah and his role as both a player and captain of Pakistan. Misbah was appointed Test captain after the England debacle last year when one captain reitred halfway through the Australia series and the other was caught as a spot-fixing cheat. When Misbah was announced as the new captain there was major uproar and most people, me included, where outraged at a guy who was not in the team to be named as the skipper. Ex Pakistan coach Geoff Lawson at the time said Misbah had the greatest cricketing brain he had worked with and believed MuH would be a great captain. What has unfolded in the last 15 months as been nothing short of sensational. His place in the Test team and as skipper is not open to debate.

Moving onto the limited overs and Misbah. How can Pakistan play a man not known as a aggresor in the shorter formats of the game. Point noted, Misbah does not fill many with confidence as he looks to play a steady innings and according to many he spoils the combination of the team. Younis Khan also plays a similar role in ODI's and together with MuH the game can get one paced and slow. So what to stats tell us:

1.Since his comeback in October 2010 in ODI's MuH has played 30 games and batted in 25 innings. He has scored 895 runs with a top score of 93 not out. His runs have come at an average of 50 with a strike rate of 70. This includes 9 half-centuries, hardly poor. The only Pakistani who has scored more runs is Mohammad Hafeez (1224) but he has played 34 innings and got his run at a average of 39.50.

2. In 2011 alone, MuH has scored 864 runs in 23 innings (7 not outs), his average is 54 and a strike rate of 70. He has scored 9 half-centuries. Again only Hafeez has scored more runs (1021) but agiain his average is 39.

3. If you include all player stats, MuH has scored the 8th most runs in 2011 in World cricket in 2011. From any player scoring 800 plus runs in 2011 he has the 5th best average. Kumar Sangakarra has scored his 1127 runs at a strike rate of 73, is he a poor player?

4. As the picture below shows how Pakistan have faired in 2011 as a team. If they beat Bangladesh 3-0 they will have more wins this year than any year before. Pakistan have also won 5 series in a row in 2011. This again clearly shows, with MuH and Younis playing 24 times together that the team has not been hamperred.
5. MuH has led Pakistan in 24 games, this includes 10 Tests, 11 ODI's and 3 T20's. Pakistan have lost only 2 of these 24 games, 17 have been won and 5 have been drawn. Overall in these games Misbah has scored 1227 runs in these games at a average of 64.57, this includes one hundred and 12 half-centuries.
One problem that MuH has his age, at 37 he is at the wrong side of his career. Mohammad Hafeez is opening the batting and bowling 10 overs more often than not. This is a hard burden at the best of times, but as we have seen this year Hafeez either gets a big score or a total failure. He has solved one half of Pakistan's opening problem. My problem is if he was now appointed captain, he may not be able to cope and his batting may suffer. Hafeez needs a year at the very least to learn the ropes of MuH and then take over. In the meantime he can continue to make runs and become the batsman his talent deserves.

In short Imran Khan played until 40, and won the coveted World Cup as captain at that age; so I do not understand what the problem is with MuH playing at 37 as captain when he is as fit as anyone in the team.

Great post Imy. The Imran Khan line in a gem. Imran in the 1992 WC was hardly doing much with the bat or ball, he was just playing as a 'player captain' just being a thorough professional, planning the strategies and keeping the team together as a respected senior. I believe Pakistan needs one captain for all formats, we all saw what happened when YK stood down from T20 captaincy, all the groupings started. Butt was planning to do the same in England against Afridi. Test Captain has to have priority and captain in all 3 for the team to get anywhere. We need to have someone like MSD. Hafeez has too much on his plate to worry about captaincy, I agree.

Imy's view is reasonable. Misbah is not at all slow in ODIs. Take the recent Sri Lanka ODI series and one-off t20 for example.

I totally agree with Imran Asghar here . I dont know why people forget that ODI has got 50 OVERS to play with , and to play those 50 overs you need dependable batsmen like MISBAH UL HAQ in the middle order.

yes off course i agree with writer but want to add some thing...
all stats says that misbah deserve captaincy as well as in team specially in test & ODI's but if left captaincy he should be out of team.it has a reason behind it. reason is these Pakistani cricketers have a problem of performing well in there captaincy but when they removed from captaincy their winning performances drops just to remove captain.Only younis khan & shahid afridi r only captains who r loyal to their countries...

Misbah safety first approach has done reasonably well

i dnt like bang bang giving crowd happiness and handing pakistan defeat

Slow but steady

Safety first but Winning

its better then 120/4 in 15 overs

120/1 in 20 overs is good enough
