Sir Alexander Chapman Ferguson. The legend  who will be 70 years old on new years eve. How to describe the greatest manager the world has ever seen and who's longevity is certain to not be repeated in the future. Great man manager? Check. Great tactician? Check. Great
transfer window dealer? Check. The man who came to Manchester United on November 6 in the year 1986 commands respect throughout the footballing world. There is not one single manager who can stand up to what he has achieved, not even "The Special One" Jose Mourinho. Manchester United just cost 20 million pounds when he first took over from Ron Atkinson and now its estimated worth is around 2 billion pounds all thanks to what Sir Alex has achieved throughout his glorious reign. Manchester United have a very proud history of bringing through youth and seeing them become men and become legends for the club while not sacrificing their thirst for trophies.  Manchester United has won all there is to be won under a single manager and has done so winning many admirers for their attacking and flair.

Sir Alex Ferguson has had an eventful and truly spectacular reign in the hot seat of the most consistently brilliant football club in the world. Starting his career as a footballer in Scotland he left the game to concentrate on coaching and the rest as they say, is history. Sir Alex has always meant business and even during the evening of the match against Sunderland chosen to celebrate his reign in the Old Trafford hot seat, he only wanted to concentrate on footballing matters and looked reasonably embarrassed by all the fuss about his reign in charge. Normally he is the main man at Manchester United and knows everything about the happenings around Old Trafford but even he was shocked when The North Stand was renamed to “The Sir Alex Ferguson Stand”.  An amazing gift to the greatest manager in the world. When I saw that, I thought “wow, the next manager of Man United will be in for a really tough time”. Reason is when the next manager, whoever he may be, will sit in the Old Trafford dug out he will see The Sir Alex Ferguson Stand right in front of his eyes and he will feel the pressure of expectancy more than ever. Sir Alex jokingly said “Mike Phelan knew about that and he didn’t tell me, so he’s sacked, he’s out of the door”.

Despite how successful he is now, his start was not so rosy although it’s hard to believe. Manchester United had gone through a succession of manager after Sir Matt Busby went to being a director of the football club but while all that was going on Sir Alex Ferguson embarked on a journey of his own Managing St Mirren for a short while before he moved to Aberdeen. Just like it is now, in those days Rangers and Celtic were superpowers of Scottish football. Sir Alex was in charge of Aberdeen who had one the league only once in their entire history. He started off well there but had to bear disappointment in his first few years after going out in Cup semi finals and losing the league despite playing very well. Alex Ferguson won the league with Aberdeen in his 5th year in charge and in doing so broke the monopoly of Celtic and Rangers by making Aberdeen the first club to win the league in the past 15 years other than Celtic and Rangers. Sir Alex Ferguson has always been known to get the best out of his players and his players give their all in trying to appease their manager. Nothing but the best impresses Sir Alex and during his time at Aberdeen his players respected him for being a disciplinarian and a figure head at the club. They knew they could trust Sir Alex and Sir Alex also helped them all the while. Without respecting your manager you do not win a single thing and his players knew that. Who knew the success they were going to have later on? Aberdeen went on to win the European Cup Winners Cup after an impressive campaign and knocked out a European Giant who was Real Madrid in 1982-83 season although they had to do with a Scottish cup and could not complete the treble by winning the Scottish league too. The next season they won the league too. All in all, Sir Alex believed in himself and he was approached by Wolves at that time but he rejected them saying “My ambitions at Aberdeen are not even half fulfilled”.

Sir Alex Ferguson was offered the job by Tottenham, Luton Town and Arsenal but he rejected all offers that came his way because of his loyalty to Aberdeen. In 1986 he joined Manchester United and promised to bring back the glory days and improving the club’s structure by reshaping it totally. He had endured some paltry displays in his first few years and was not pleased with his senior players he promised to bring in youth. “Fergie’s Fledglings” as they went on to be called were truly immense and helpful to Sir Alex Ferguson’s reign as they provided youthful exuberance coupled with supreme talent. David Beckham, Ryan Giggs, Phil Neville, Gary Neville and Paul Scholes were the major players and with a whole future ahead of them they stepped up after being promoted to the senior side. Sir Alex bought Danish keeper Peter Schmeichel in 1991 and has since gone on to be regarded as the best goal keeper the world has seen. Manchester United finally won the league in 92’ season and put his critics to shame with some spectacular displays throughout the season. They also beat Barcelona in European Cup Winners Cup as it was known at that time. Came along a French prodigy signed from Leeds United, King Eric Cantona. He was voted the best player of Manchester United because of his influence and his match winning displays. Words are not enough to describe what that man was and how he helped Manchester United become what it is today. Fast Forward a few years, Manchester United won the treble in 98-99 season winning in dramatic fashion against Bayern Munich in the dying 2 minutes of match after which Sir Alex Ferguson said “Football, Bloody hell”.

Manchester United kept on winning the plaudits for their displays and players like Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes were starting to become integral parts of the team along with Roy Keane and some other seniors. Manchester United won a lot during this period and were regarded as the best team in the land with their consistent displays. A season with one trophy at United is regarded as a failure, Sir Alex has the thirst for more and his players understand that and do their best for the cause of Manchester United. Winning another Champions League
final in ’08 season again in dramatic fashion after John Terry slipped up in his penalty. Manchester United have numerous trophies in their cabinet and they do not fear any team in the world all thanks to Sir Alex and his insatiable desire to keep Manchester United at the perch of the footballing world and England in particular. He has seen off so many managers during his time it is hard to keep count! So many have come and gone but Sir Alex has stayed there and delivered success for so long and still if you ask when he is going to retire? He will say “Never”. Sir Alex is the embodiment of football and a perfect role model of how a manager should act. He is the master of mind games too and has seen far too many managers crack under pressure and lose out to him in bizarre ways. Sir Alex’s story will never end. The trophies he has won and will win in the future will never end. You would think having achieved all he should go? He won’t. Nowadays facing the challenge of Manchester City and Barcelona he will be here for a few while and keep on winning. Sir Alex Ferguson, I salute you.
